How wise is your wisdom tooth?

March 6th, 2007 Posted in Chronicles

Some people have them, some people don’t, they’re the third molars (or in layman terms ‘Wisdom teeth”) right at the back of our mouths, the big teeth that you use to grind food with. Yes they are big, strong, hard to reach, and potentially unwise despite their given names. Under normal circumstances these supposedly wise teeth will grow out of order, position and persist to grow even if there’s not enough space in your jaw (oh now you wonder why it’s called wisdom teeth), and in rare circumstances it will just pop out nicely like the rest of your other nicely grown teeth (that’s it it’s not decayed). Haha ok, perhaps the earlier description of rare and normal circumstances should be turned around, but hey, mine turned out to be dis positioned and having a lack of space to grow which is normal since I’m normal, so sue me :P.

Outside
The ‘wise one’ in halves.

Well anyway, when it’s dis positioned, it causes a great deal of complications, knocking on adjacent teeth (ouch), knocking on your nerves (super ouch), causing decay cause it’s not properly positioned for you to reach and clean it properly, no kidding, even using mouth wash does not reach it (ok so mine had a big decayed hole in it), all this can lead to excruciating pain not only affecting your impacted tooth (oh yeah, these cases of dis positioned wisdom teeth are called impacted wisdom teeth), but extends further to your face, and even up to your eyes and head (hey the sucker is kicking at your nerves directly, it’s bound to err… get on your nerves right?), and no pain killers won’t stop the pain, it’s just persist till it decides to stop torturing you. And believe me, it’s pain is next to say a fractured finger (done that too), gouged out eyeball (not intending to try this) and perhaps stabbing yourself in the gut (again no intentions on doing this). So what’s the solution to ending these pain attacks permanently? Remove your impacted wisdom tooth by way of surgery (that sounds dangerous and risky, any simpler solutions?), and the simple solution? REMOVE your impacted wisdom tooth, unless of course you want to remove the front healthy tooth and keep the normally half decayed wisdom tooth which is at an odd angle and will potentially continue to decay and cause pain till you REMOVE it!

Inside
An inner look of the ‘wise one’

I should know better, having them removed just today by way of surgery, no it’s not an easy task of just using a pair of pliers and yanking it right out of your mouth and hope you don’t bleed to death from the damage done (just joking), instead it needs to be surgically removed (why do I feel shivers whenever I hear that word, especially when it’s used on me). Yes, the dental surgeon will have to cut or perhaps better described as saw your ‘wisdom tooth’ in half and yank it out the old fashioned way. Why does it need to be sawed in half? Well according to sources I read, it’s to ease the extraction and reduce the size of the incision made on your soft tissue (your gums). The procedure does not take long, about half an hour, though I think it was way shorter than that, oh and the best part is you won’t feel a thing, the suffering only comes after, like what I’m experiencing now. Swelling, bleeding, and hopefully nothing else (I’m pretty sure it’s swollen right now, and kind of numb), but still it pales in comparison (right now at least) to the pain when the tooth was decaying and kicking at my nerves.

Well now, I’ve got to continue holding ice packs to my face to ease the swelling now, if you have any questions about your wisdom tooth problems (hopefully you won’t have them) do contact me at johnathan@seraphstudios.net or just leave a comment, I’ll try to answer them according to my own experience. Again, the wisdom tooth is not wise as believed to be.
