Transformers

More than meets the eye
Transformers - More than meets the eye, now I’m sure any hot blooded young kid would remember this cartoon series from their childhoods. Transforming robots that hide themselves and blend in with earth’s population in the form of everyday vehicles and appliances (microscope and radios count as appliances I suppose). After years of animation, from 2D to the 3D Beast Wars series, transformers is finally making it’s way to the big screen, courtesy of Michael Bay, whom I assume is a transformers fan as well. The movie will be out this year, 4th of July 2007, Americans really have something to rejoice on that day besides independence. Let’s go through a bit of transformers storyline:

Optimus Prime - leader of the Autobots
The premise of transformers is a vast one, and the story tells of their existence on the planet Cybertron long before there was civilisation on earth. These transformer robots were sentient beings, able to think for themselves, lived peacefully on Cybertron, until Megatron, a rebellious transformer decides that he should be the leader (I’m pretty sure there’s more to the history of how the Autobots and Decepticons came to be, one that involves Quintessons, but that is another story), forms his own group of renegade transformers known as the Decepticons and starts waging war on his brethren. As in any TV programme, be it cartoons, movies, where there’s an antagonist, there’s always a protagonist, and in transformers, they are none other than the Autobots.

It’s a war zone out there
Now the war has waged on for a long time and in a space pursuit, both Autobot and Decepticon crafts are damaged and stranded on planet Earth (there’s been several iterations for their appearance on Earth, wonder what it will be for the movie?) and their never ending war wages on.

Puny soldiers with puny guns
I just know that the storyline for the movie will be changed, but to what extent I’m still unsure, hope it’s not a big a change as the designs for the robots. Anyone who has seen the trailer will agree with me on that, the robots look as I would put it, very terminator-ish, with little nice flat surfaces like the ones seen in the cartoons, perhaps it’s a design based on functionality and realism? Whatever it is, I don’t really like it so far, save for Scorpinok and Optimus Prime, heck you can’t even recognize Megatron if stomped on you. The designs aren’t bad, they’re just not representative of the Transformers we’ve come to know. Well with all that said, I still can’t wait for it’s release in July, another 4 months to go, till then, feast your eyes on this hi-res trailer I’ve uploaded. Download trailer.
*Note: Right click and save to download the trailer, as it is hi res, the file size is quite big for streaming.

If Michael Bay was a TF fan, he wouldn’t have approved the designs.

maybe he wanted to add his own twist to his favourite robots?
