Keropok anyone?

July 7th, 2007 | 7 Comments | Posted in Chronicles

Finally I have the chance to try the keropok I bought from Kelantan when I went for my Redang trip, yeah I know, it’s been a long time, but I did not have the chance or rather I was not too well earlier to take these fried and oily junk food. Well now that my throat is feeling better, I can indulge on some junk food, and hopefully my throat won’t act up again.

And so we begin with heating up the oil in a wok, make sure it’s not too shallow, and if the oil is not hot enough you’ll end up with hard and rubbery keropok, so be sure to leave it on the fire for some time before attempting to throw in the first piece of keropok. Oh by the way this is Fish crackers, wanted to buy Prawn crackers but apparently Kelantan only has Fish crackers, kind of weird. There are several kinds of Fish cracker too, made from different fish, the one I bought is as below:

There’s even a choice of boneless and non-boneless crackers, boneless ones are more expensive of course and probably easier on your teeth as well. I bought the boneless ones, you can tell by the white spots on the crackers themselves, the white spots are the bones, or so my friend told me.

When you think the oil is hot enough just throw in a piece of the keropok as a test subject to see if it opens up nicely, and of course try and see if it’s too hard, if it is continue heating up the oil. When that’s done slowly throw in a few pieces of the keropok and watch it blossom like flowers. I just cooked up about a quarter pack and kept the rest for later, can’t finish so much anyway. Alright, now it’s time to enjoy some keropok, alternatively you can eat it with chillie sauce as well if you like your keropok spicy :)
