Penang Heritage Trail: Part 1

Alright, finally got to uploading the pics from the Penang Heritage Trail outing which I went with my friends a few weeks ago, yes I know it’s way overdue, but better late than never right? Now eventhough we’re local Penangites, that doesn’t mean we’ve seen every nook and cranny on the island, and what’s more, we have better cameras in hand right now, so why not go around documenting the interesting places of our own hometown? Firstly it’s cheap, and since we’re still fairly new to photography, it will serve as a good and economical practice. :)

Coincidentally, there was an event going on that morning, and there was a marching parade from don’t know what school. It was the White Cane day parade, apart from knowing it’s for the visually impaired, I have no idea what this event is about.

We started out the day early, was it 7 or 8 am again? I think it was 8am, Mich came to pick me up, then we went to Greenlane to rendezvous with another two friends. As Penangites know, it’s a bitch to find parking spaces, so we car pooled for the day, saves the trouble of looking for a space for another car. Our first agenda was breakfast, can’t shoot on an empty stomach right? Even cars need fuel to run. We had a nice dim sum breakfast at Tai Thong restaurant, sorry no food pics as nobody thought of bringing down their cameras. After breakfast we headed straight for our first destination, Fort Conwallis, and guess what, we were too early, the place hasn’t opened yet. It only opens at 9am. To kill the time, we wandered around the area, and took some shots of the Town Hall and State Assembly building.

At last it was 9am, the gates had opened and yeah they charge entrance fees nowadays, not that many people actually came here when it was free last time anyway. It’s been quite some time since I came here myself, the place is still as empty as before, but this time I’ve come with a different purpose, to take pictures, haha really sound and look like a tourist eh, believe it or not, some people actually thought we were! Not just tourists carry around cameras and packbacks/sling bags ok? And so the shooting frenzy begins, but seriously, the fort ain’t all too interesting.

What was interesting was that they have the bunker open, I don’t remember it ever been open in my previous visits. So I curiously went in to have a look, no no ghosts around, but there was a display of barrels, cannon balls, granite powder, and other ammunition for the fort.

Then there was a church with some church music playing, but it’s kind of disappointing that they did not properly decorate the interior with some benches and altar to make it well, look like a church! The place was just empty, and creepy. The more interesting display was the camp site, with tents, camp fire(no real fire, just the firewood) with logs around it as seats and a flag as well. Oh yes, there were lots of ‘land mines’ around, aka: horse manure, and I was wondering where did it all come from till I saw a pen at the corner of the fort with horses in it.

Well that’s about it in Fort Cornwallis, we then went to the light house next door, the breeze at the top was simply wonderful, the view as well. Next stop would be Pinang Peranakan Mansion, but I’ll save that for Part 2.
